Lumen prints of the protest outside the Supreme Court on September 28th, 2018 against Brett Kavanaugh’s confirmation to the Court, depicted in various states of legibility. A lumen print is made by exposing a piece of silver gelatin paper to sunlight for several minutes, usually underneath a negative or an object, resulting in a color change on the paper. The paper is not developed—doing so would create a completely black print with no details—but rather it is fixed or left to continue exposing. These prints are essentially latent images that materialize and are preserved. The light bouncing off viewers gets “impressed” onto the areas of the paper that are uncovered by the negatives.
